How many of us have ever felt unsteady as we try to attune to identity and culture, but don't know quite what to say in practice? How has this shown up when our own identity and culture is the same or different than our clients? What happens when we witness comments from our colleagues that don't feel attuned or constructive? And how many of us have inadvertently been the ones to make others uncomfortable? What did we do about that-- and what could we have done about that? Finally, what does this have to do with Collaborative Practice? A microaggression is a subtle, often unrecognized or unintentional comment about individuals who identify as belonging to a marginalized group that may well be unintentional, and at the same time have a reverberating impact. We will examine microaggressions from various viewpoints, including recognizing their indirect and subtle forms, understanding their impacts, and learning how we can respond more skillfully in the moment without inadvertently causing more harm. We will also examine why microaggressions, identity and culture matter in Collaborative Practice. If you have any experiences you'd like to share, please email both Elana Katz at [email protected] and Carmen Rodriguez at [email protected] and we will reply to you privately to develop with you how this experience can be processed together. We learn and grow best when we grow together.
Please join the conversation and lend your insights, wisdom, and support. |
